Proteus is Amazon's first fully autonomous mobile robot: a low-slung AMR that slides under package carts (GoCarts) and moves them through open areas of fulfillment and sort centers without caged-off zones. Built by Amazon Robotics, it runs in 25 US fulfillment centers as of mid-2026, and a next-generation version unveiled in June 2026 accepts plain spoken instructions. It is an internal Amazon system and cannot be purchased.

Proteus matters less as a product and more as a signal: it defines the state of the art in free-roaming warehouse AMRs and shows where the industry's largest robot fleet (1M+ units, coordinated by the DeepFleet AI model) is heading. Warehouse operators can't buy it, but should benchmark vendors against its capabilities — full autonomy among people and, from 2026, natural-language tasking. Its European rollout in 2027 will pressure every AMR vendor's roadmap.
