Robot-based automated storage and retrieval (AS/RS): rack-climbing robots bring totes to goods-to-person workstations for e-commerce and omnichannel fulfillment
The R5 is the fifth-generation Red Line robot that runs on top of AutoStore's cube-storage grid — the world's most widely installed robotic AS/RS, with 1,950+ systems in 65+ countries. Each 151 kg robot travels at 3.1 m/s on the grid, digging and delivering bins of up to 30 kg to goods-to-person ports. Variants cover taller 425 mm bins (R5+) and LTO fast-charge multishift operation (R5 Pro). AutoStore is publicly listed on the Oslo exchange.

AutoStore remains the density benchmark: no other AS/RS stores more inventory per cubic meter, and the R5 platform is proven across two decades and nearly 2,000 installations — vendor risk is about as low as warehouse robotics gets, underscored by Amazon signing a global supply agreement in 2026. Trade-offs are structural: a fixed grid, bin-size limits, and dig-depth latency for rarely touched SKUs. Ideal for space-constrained, high-SKU e-commerce; less suited to bulky goods or operations needing layout flexibility.
